About

About Phoenix Mental Health LLC.
DR. LYNN VARELA,
I was raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, I attended Catholic schools, and embraced the rich Hispanic culture. My upbringing provided me with a respect and an appreciation for other cultures.
My upbringing provided me with respect and an appreciation for other cultures. One of the things I take pride in is achieving self-actualization through years of my own therapeutic journey to process past trauma.
I became a therapist in order to “pay it forward” so that others who have been through difficult times, whether due to trauma, adjustment difficulties, or transitional periods in life, can live their life to the fullest.
Issues I’m confident in and trained to address are:
  • Trauma (layers of difficult experiences beyond your control or ability to deal with, finding yourself not able to function in life, feelings of disconnect and emotional numbness, feelings of chaos)
  • Abandonment
  • Difficulties attaching to others
  • Difficulties building meaningful relationships
  • Experiencing trust issues
  • Attachment and inner child work
Facing difficult issues or asking for help in life is hard, and, in some cases, is not within cultural norms. You may feel:
  • Ostracized
  • That you are supposed to keep it in the family
  • That you, and only you alone, are supposed to be strong and pick yourself up by your bootstraps
You’re not alone, I was raised this way also. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that asking for help is beneficial and is nothing to fear. With my assistance, we will start peeling back the onion to a life worth living.

DR. ALICIA LATTY
My name is Dr. Alicia Latty, and I want to help both you and the world become a better and more mentally resilient place. I was born in the small but proud country of Jamaica, and became a naturalized American citizen when I was a teen. As a young girl, I personally experienced the devastation caused by poor access to healthcare. My grandmother, who I adore and draw inspiration from, was the family bedrock; she happily fed the hungry, provided counseling for many abused young women, and even provided refuge to those without. Shadowing her as a child imparted me with a baseline longing to end suffering and pain one individual at a time if necessary. A recurring theme amongst those afflicted with trauma was clear: low-income and mentally disturbed individuals are left to suffer due to their inability to navigate a rigged system.
Mental instability is a problem worldwide, and those who suffer the most are unaware of the dangers behind mental instability and the insurmountable suffering it causes to those around them. Paramount to all else, even if the individual is aware of a problem, is the need for readily available, affordable, and specialized care as a fundamental necessity. Availability, affordability, and specialized individual care are the services I want to provide to anyone in need of fortitude. My fire to support individuals in exceeding their expected potential ignited for me as a child and burns ever-brighter now, as an adult.
Eliminating the mental malice that plagues the individual, and this world, is why I passionately pursue my career choice in counseling.

Mentorship & Counseling Approaches:
  • Humanistic - I will help you to achieve your highest potential. We will emphasize your self-growth and strive to achieve self-actualization, becoming whole. I focus on the belief that you have control over your own destiny. I promise to provide genuine care and guided mentorship to uncover your life meaning and passions. We will be focusing on free will, responsibility and self-determination.
  • Psychoanalysis – Addresses the unconscious forces that drive behavior. I will actively listen as you freely talk to me about whatever comes to your mind without censoring (free association); we will explore your dreams for important information about the self (dream analysis) and tap into your hidden feelings (transference).
  • Behavioral Therapy – Focuses on learning response by changing unwanted and destructive behaviors through behavior modification techniques. Discover your self-damaging habits and explore change and redirecting.
  • Cognitive Therapy – I focus on how you think and help you change negative thoughts and feelings, and we will be oriented toward problem solving. We lovingly analyze your present situation and distorted thinking. Your self-validating negative loops will be assessed and tactfully augmented when disparaging. Oftentimes, addressing these mental incongruencies will provide relief in anxiety, self-esteem issues, eating disorders, or even substance abuse and dependency issues.

Jalyssa Cardell,
My name is Jalyssa Cardell, and I have over six years of experience working in the mental health field. My passion was first kindled when I came face to face with the negative impacts of poor mental health education, and how that lack of knowledge resulted in unnecessary suffering of those impacted. Additionally, I hope to remove the negative stigma that is attached to mental health so that people will feel comfortable embracing the changes that they would like to see within themselves.
In the years I have spent working closely with people suffering from mental illness, I was able to help many of my patients gain understanding by learning coping skills to overcome emotional and psychological difficulties; the tools I have successfully used with patients include, but are not limited to: Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Exposure Therapy.
I have provided mental health assistance to both individuals and families suffering from various types of depression, social anxieties, substance abuse issues, and phase-of-life changes. Working in group environments, I have provided counseling that covers psycho-educational and process-oriented training. I excel at developing ways of definitively managing stress, cultivating a positive self-view and self-esteem, identifying personality disorders and resolution approaches, as well as specializing in treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. My goal is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for you to flourish and develop the skills needed to live a happier life. I will assist you through the therapeutic process and walk alongside you on this journey.
